Welcome to Scantling According to ISO 12215
First of all, we would like to tell you about the structure of the course and then its detailed content;
STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE
This is a course with its own interface that works in harmony with your internet browser as it can be complex. In other words, you can think of it like a website with videos, images and texts. The course is in such a format because it will be the most effective way to teach this seemingly complex subject.
You can navigate the simple interface of the course and become one of the professionals in this field at the end of a quality training period.
After registering the course, you can access the real interface of the course by downloading the rar files in the appendix.
Do not think that the video duration in this course is short. These videos have been uploaded due to the udemy platform’s obligation to upload videos. There are 64 videos on the interface of the course. In addition, these videos are supported with texts and images. In this way, this course is aimed to add unique experiences to its students.
In addition, you will be able to receive continuous support from us until you learn this job. You will be able to learn about Scantling and much more as if you were taking a private lesson, as we will always answer your questions very quickly.
Enjoy the course. Through explanatory texts, images and videos, we will be in constant communication over the Internet, solving and analyzing all necessary problems. Let’s build the best possible boat together.
Wishing you to be one of the best in the world in this field.
Best Regards
JUSTIFICATION FOR ISO 12215 SCANTLNG COURSE
The regulations for boat scantling and the recommended practices for small boats differ significantly from one another, which limits the general acceptance of scantling for these boats worldwide. This is the reason that led to the preparation of ISO 12215 standards.
Classification Society Regulations, in general, were not intended for application to boats less than 24 meters long. Although most of them have gradually incorporated rules for yachts and special boats, the limitation for length still persists.
ISO standards for small boats have filled that gap, that territory where there were no specific guidelines or unique criteria. A large number of ISO standards have been published for small boats that practically cover all aspects of their design. Currently, small boats are not only understood as recreational boats but also as commercial recreational boats or working boats, ranging from 2 meters to 24 meters in length.
Recreational boating has experienced extraordinary growth in the last 15 or 20 years, which has created the need to regulate it, thinking mainly about its safety. One of the most neglected aspects in the design of small boats, which greatly affects their safety, has been the calculation of their structures.
That guide, regarding the calculation of scantlings, is ISO 12215.
ISO 12215 provides instructions for determining the various stresses on the hull of boats, their appendages and rigging (in the case of sailboats), and the criteria that make them acceptable.
It is not easy to find good structure engineers in the naval industry. Still, since ships must be built, we will have to resort to two possible solutions:
1-Specializing in structure calculation by acquiring in-depth theoretical knowledge, allowing us to understand and handle finite element analysis methods, the boundary element method, etc.
2-With good basic knowledge, use the regulations that Classification Societies or ISO Standards put at our disposal.
The first solution, in addition to very deep technical knowledge, requires handling modeling programs for the preparation of very accurate 3D models. If the model is not good enough, the results will not be valid.
The second solution is the one most designers must resort to. And it is for these professionals that this course focused on ISO Standards has been designed. The reality is that it is not easy to assimilate the procedures followed by them since they do not usually give too many explanations. The initial objective will be to explain how these calculations are carried out, the procedures to follow according to the cases, and the applicable formulas, ensuring their correctness and accuracy. But the ultimate goal will be to analyze the results obtained with sufficient criteria to be able to adopt the best possible solution, which is always various.
Therefore, the course explains ISO 12215-5, helps to analyze the results obtained with it, and explains why some solutions are more suitable than others. In the end, like SCT software programs can be used to perform the manual work, simple mathematical operations that are not difficult but exhausting. (The designer must be able to use his time to design, think, create, while the mechanical, non-creative work must be done by the machine. This software allows us to do quick calculations, explore different solutions and optimize our structure.)
All of this is what can be expected from a course on boat framing in a first appreciation. But “scantling a boat” involves something more:
-
Designing the structure, that is, specifying the elements that it will have, their location on the hull, their connections between them.
These elements must guarantee:
-
continuity (no sudden changes in geometry – heights and widths)
-
alignment (all members should be aligned and following each other)
-
capability (able to withstand applied loads)
-
Dialoguing with the builder to design the structure that suits him best.
-
Providing all the necessary information, plans, lists, calculations, etc., to obtain the approval of the regulatory agency.
-
Detailed information to be able to make the construction plans of the boat from it.
The student of this course, regardless of their initial technical qualification, will be able to carry out all the related work once it is completed:
-
With the assurance that their structure complies with the SOR (Statement of Requirements) of the boat in the best possible way.
-
Obtaining very precise information about weights and centers of gravity, which will allow for more accurate naval architecture calculations.
-
Enabling the preparation of construction plans.
We wish you pleasant learning.
Best Regards
