What is Free Form Worship?

It’s been several years back since I cried out to God, “God, if you are so Immense, then why does my worship lack a greater substance – to reflect Your Greatness?  Why isn’t it possible for me to worship You more – in a way that You Deserve?”

I am Charlie;  I am a musician, who many years ago, became a worshiper.  Like pretty much all worship leaders, my pastor was probably like yours – recognizing a worshiper with musical talent – so it made sense that he would ask us to lead worship. 

I really appreciate the worship leader of today.  Many are relentless foot soldiers that aren’t under bright lights with a large auditorium of excitement – unsung heroes that continue their ministries many times without much thanks or appreciation, not to mention being often ‘advised’ – what song to do, what volume to play or not play.  Are you like me?  Years ago, I found myself using ministry time praying, giving a testimony, or a mini message, or navigating an uncomfortable pause – not quite sure what to say.   After all, we are the worship leader, and we should know what to say – at all times, right?  Well, honestly, sometimes, it was a struggle.  There were moments that I questioned if there was more, but now that I look back, I can see that

                                                                    the speed of life outran them, and

                                                                        the pot of life stirred them into the mix.

And then, I forgot, until…

Something began stirring in me, and I cried out to God.  It wasn’t actually a cry – for His Help – it was just a cry of frustration – because my worship felt like it should be big – because He Is Big!!  And to my surprise, He began a journey, a school for me; I didn’t know that He would Hear and begin to show me – more!

           *prayer between songs,

           *a testimony,

           * a ‘mini’ message

          *  pauses – because you’re just unsure (at the moment) what you should say/what needs to be said?

After all, we’re the leader, the worship leader, so we should know what needs to be said…
