How to Get Freight
Once you have completed all the requirements to finally get your own authority active – the next major thing you are going to need to focus on is finding and booking loads to haul so you can start generating revenue as quickly as possible.

It will have taken you at least 21 days to have gotten your authority and possibly several more days to a few weeks even to get your plates and IFTA stickers. So your expenses are already running and you will very soon have ANOTHER insurance premium coming due.
If your equipment is financed you may have a payment due or a couple due BEFORE you are able to begin generating revenue. So you can see just how important booking your first load and your first few loads really is.

New owner Operators are typically going to get most or even all of their loads initially from freight brokers. So, it is important to understand who freight brokers and freight agents are and how they operate. My name is L.D. Sewell and I will be one of your instructors for this course. By the way – the D. Stands for Derrick so if we ever meet or talk on the phone you can call me Derrick too. I am also the founder of a trucking business I run along with my business partner and wife – Abbie. She will be your instructor for much of this course, and in our own company, she is primarily responsible for Operations.
That means she is looking at load boards and talking to brokers and agents daily – booking loads and then handling all the behind-the-scenes stuff for the Motor Carrier division of our business that keeps the revenue coming in and the business profitable.
We put this course together for you to help you get started and to answer many of the same questions we had when we were first starting out as a motor carrier ourselves.
