This course will introduce meditation to those new to mindfulness meditation, and deepen and enrich the practice of those who already have experience. I have tried to cover just the basics, and in fact for proper meditation the basics are often all that one needs. It is both the simplest thing, and most difficult thing in the world. Some take to it quite easily, but for many it is a real challenge. Whatever the case for you, meditation is an enriching, life-long practice that will teach you who you are, and what is the world that surrounds you. Not to make things too difficult for you though, it is best just to start with the basics, and realize the peace, clarity, and everyday practicality of this practice. This course is about using awareness, meditation, breath, and concentration meditation to guide, inform, and improve your life second by second, day by day.
There are many meditative practices, some good, some not so good. I emphasize Buddhist tradition because it has the best foundation, and in fact is very similar to psychotherapy, and rehab programs. Mindfulness is often a part of religious traditions but does not need to be. Mindful meditation in the context of this course is used to not necessarily bring spiritual enlightenment, but more to empower students in their daily lives.
