When sorting information in a worksheet, you can rearrange the data to find values quickly. You can sort a range or table of data on one or more columns of data. For example, you can sort employees —first by department, and then by last name.
Sort data in a table
-
Sort A to Z – sorts the selected column in an ascending order.
-
Sort Z to A – sorts the selected column in a descending order.
Custom Sort – sorts data in multiple columns by applying different sort criteria. Here’s how to do a custom sort: Select Custom Sort. Select Add Level.
To change the order of your data, you’ll want to sort it. Right-click a cell in the column you want to sort, and point to Sort. Since the cells in this column contains only numbers, the sort options are Sort Smallest to Largest, and Sort Largest to Smallest.
On the Data tab, under Tools, click Consolidate. In the Function box, click the function that you want Excel to use to consolidate the data. In each source sheet, select your data, and then click Add. The file path is entered in All references. What is data consolidation?
Data consolidation is the process of consolidating data from multiple sources into a single destination. During the consolidation of data process, different data sources are put together into a single data store. This process is sometimes also referred to as data integration.
Excel provides a wide range of built-in formulas and functions for data analysis. Use these formulas and functions to perform calculations, apply logical conditions, perform statistical analysis, and more. Common functions include SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, IF, VLOOKUP, SUMIF, COUNTIF, etc.
Data Analysis Tools: Excel provides additional data analysis tools like regression analysis, data validation, scenario manager, solver, and more. These tools help to perform advanced analysis and make predictions or solve complex problems.
VLOOKUP: The VLOOKUP function searches for a value in the leftmost column of a range and retrieves a value in the same row from a specified column. Its syntax is as follows:
VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, [range_lookup])
-
lookup_value: The value you want to find.
-
table_array: The range of cells where the data is stored.
-
col_index_num: The column number from which to retrieve the value.
-
range_lookup: Optional. You can specify whether to find an exact match or an approximate match. False (0) for an exact match, True (1) or omitted for an approximate match.
HLOOKUP: Similar to VLOOKUP, the HLOOKUP function searches for a value in the top row of a range and retrieves a value from the same column in a specified row. Its syntax is: HLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, row_index_num, [range_lookup])
-
lookup_value: The value you want to find.
-
table_array: The range of cells where the data is stored.
-
row_index_num: The row number from which to retrieve the value.
-
range_lookup: Optional. Specifies whether to find an exact or approximate match.
