So you want to work in Antarctica

So many people would love to visit Antarctica but, as you are probably already aware, it is prohibitively expensive to go as a tourist. The aim of this course is to give you an insight into another option that many assume is closed to them unless they are a scientist. All the media coverage focuses on science, but the support services required to enable that science requires a huge diversity of skills sets and job roles, many of them practical rather than academic. You may be more qualified than you think for job roles based in Antarctica!

I first visited a sub Antarctic Island when I was 21 as part of an expedition for young people. I wanted a job in the sector but never thought it would be possible. However, in my late 30s I was lucky enough to get a role where I visited Antarctic and sub Antarctic bases by both ship and air. Through my experience I gained a lot of insight that my 21 year old self would have really benefitted from regarding what they’re looking for and the roles required. I hope by sharing this information it will help inspire you to realise that such amazing roles are not out of reach.
