The Foreign Service refers to the diplomatic corps of a country responsible for representing the country abroad in diplomatic missions, such as embassies and consulates. The Foreign Service is a division of a country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or equivalent department, and is responsible for maintaining and advancing the country’s political, economic, and cultural interests in other countries. The Foreign Service is composed of a professional corps of diplomats and support staff who work to maintain and advance the country’s relationships with other countries, facilitate trade and investment, and provide consular services to citizens abroad. Foreign Service officers represent the country in negotiations, attend international conferences and meetings, and provide advice to the government on foreign policy issues. In order to join the Foreign Service, individuals must typically meet certain qualifications and pass an examination to demonstrate their knowledge of foreign affairs, language proficiency, and other skills. A Foreign Service Officer (FSO) is a commissioned member of the United States Foreign Service. As diplomats, Foreign Service Officers formulate and implement the foreign policy of the United States. FSOs spend most of their careers overseas as members of U.S. embassies, consulates, and other diplomatic missions, though some receive assignments to combatant command, Congress, and educational institutions such as the various U.S. War Colleges. Within the Foreign Service, they are also known as Generalists.
