Welcome to the course Life Skills Program for Individuals with Disabilities!
This course provides an overview of an occupational therapy student’s doctoral capstone experience at a community-based functional day program for adolescents and young adults with disabilities. The student’s occupational therapy doctoral capstone experience focused on program development. The overarching goal of the doctoral capstone experience was to develop a life skills curriculum and create occupation-based activities that are designed for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to foster skill development, increase their independence with instrumental activities of daily living, and promote occupational engagement.
This course reviews the student’s needs assessment, literature review, area of focus, guiding occupational therapy model, and learning objectives. In addition, it reviews where the doctoral capstone experience was completed and the artifacts that were created including a life skills curriculum binder of graded activities, an article discussing the role of occupational therapists in community-based programs, and visual materials for a life skills subscription box. Please view the attached resources to explore the artifacts. The course ends with a short quiz to review and summarize the key points of the information shared throughout this course.
