This course is a review of the Doctoral Capstone Experience of an Occupational Therapy student. It explores the development of the experience by the student through the completion of a Needs Assessment as well as the completion of a literature review through a Critically Appraised Topic. This is additional discussion referring to guiding theories and connections to Drake University curricular themes. A variety of learning objectives and respective artifacts executed throughout the experience will also be presented in relation to the experience. Based in Denver, CO, this experience is completed at a state-run facility providing a plethora of residential adult services for individuals experiencing high behavioral needs, medical fragility, and a variety of mental health diagnoses. While de-escalation is a main topic of the experience, additional topics include creation of environmental modifications, exploration of a novel state organization, and development of an inservice presentation about functional impairments. A review of the site is also provided going more in depth about the services, structure, and service provision model that is unique to the organization. It is recommended by the creator that individuals wishing to review this course have a basic understanding of the occupational therapy profession as this site is considered an emerging area of practice.
