Welcome to this course on Futurism in Art. Futurism is an artistic, cultural, social and political movement from the early 20th Century. It is an art that seeks to capture and celebrate movement, speed, dynamics and change. Futurism is an art very much akin to Cubism and therefore I provide a brief introduction to Cubism as part of the course. Futurism is a very influential current of art. Futurism was an Italian art movement of the early twentieth century that aimed to capture in art the dynamism and energy of the modern world. The first tenet in the manifesto reads, We intend to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and fearlessness. It not only incorporates elements from the various art movements developing at the time, but is also a strong contributor to our perception of movement and change. Futurism has also been associated with political movements, particularly in Italy. The idea is of change, of overthrowing tradition, which in the eyes of the futurists gets in the way of progress. Futurism was launched by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909. On 20 February he published his Manifesto of Futurismon the front page of the Paris newspaper Le Figaro. It is in Italy that we are issuing this manifesto of ruinous and incendiary violence, by which we today are founding Futurism, because we want to deliver Italy from its gangrene of professors, archaeologists, tourist guides and antiquaries. Italy has been too long the great second-hand market. We want to get rid of the innumerable museums which cover it with innumerable cemeteries.Futurism is an idea that although specific to a time and place in art history, continues to be practiced by many contemporary artists.
